Am I Not Enough

Night is creeping through the city streets
Rain is falling with a steady beat
Puddles flowing down into sidewalk drains
Droplets clinging to the misty window pane

In a rented room, lying in a tangled bed
She can feel the moment coming that she always dreads
Like a hundred time before he slips into his coat
She speaks softly, pleading to him as he turns to go

(She says)
Come back baby, if you go away
I'll be all alone to face another day
I've done everything I can for you, is it not enough?
If I asked you to, could you stay awhile
We can lay right here and I will make you smile
Every time you leave I am so afraid that it will be too tough
Am I not enough?  Am I not enough?

He goes back then to his other life
Little children and a long suffering wife
She asks what he's been doing and about where he's been
So he makes up some old lie to put her off again

In the darkness of the night  she lies wide awake
Wondering how much more of this she can really take
He's left before but she always seems to want him back
Though she loves him dearly, one more time and she's bound to crack

(She says)
Come back baby, if you go away
I'll be all alone to face another day
I've done everything I can for you, is it not enough?
If I asked you to, would you turn around
That closing door is such an awful sound
I only  wish I knew why between us two it has to be so rough
Am I not enough?  Am I not enough?
